Singapore’s first ASEAN Heritage Park, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve has been protected as a Nature Reserve since January 2002. The 87 ha wetland site was designated as a nature park in 1989 following a proposal put up by a group of avid birdwatchers from the then Malayan Nature Society (Singapore Branch). Originally a series of prawn ponds and fish farms, the area was redeveloped into a park for wildlife and today, it stands at 161 ha of mangroves and freshwater wetlands after 2 bouts of expansion.

The Reserve is a stopover point for migratory birds of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway between September and March as well, with birds such as waders and shorebirds between the summer breeding grounds of North Asia (such as Siberia and China), and the wintering grounds of the Southern Hemisphere (Australia and beyond).

Mudskippers are fish, but can survive out of water because they can hold water in their enlarged gill chambers and keep their gills moist.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR:

Trails

Trails which last from a short 20 min to over a few hours are available in the Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve, each specifically catered to visitors who are looking for an unique experience in the Reserve. During the trails, such as a 1.3km coastal trail which runs along the coast where the Straits of Johor is, one can expect to spot a large variety of wildlife, ranging from foraging birds and insects to cocrodiles and even monitor lizards

Mud Mud Mud

One can step onto the mudflats during low tide to get up close with creatures living in the mud. A floating platform would lower them near the bottom of the mudflats.  Here, you can expect to see  worms, crabs, shellfish, snails and even giant mudskippers in the mud.

Mangrove Boardwalk

There is a 500m-long boardwalk which elevates to a height of 3m, allowing us to walk thorugh the understorey of the secondary forest. Birds and insects that forage and live in the mid-canopy area can be spotted here!
