Beginnings
Jurong Frog Farm is a success story that comes from the humblest of beginnings, when Mr Wan Bock Thiaw, then foreseeing the potential of farming the American Bullfrog, opened it in 1981 after supplying frogs to the market by himself in the 1970s. Over the years, Jurong Frog Farm had grown into the thriving business that it has become today.
In 1997, Mr Wan began working incessantly on the research and development of the popular Chinese beauty enhancing ingredient known as Snow Jelly (Hashima雪蛤). The actual product, JFF Specially Selected Hashima, began retailing to consumers in 1999 and was a major development in the farm’s expansion in Singapore.
2006 was the year which marked a significant milestone in the farm, where Mr Wan passed down the reins of handling the farm to his youngest daughter, Ms Chelsea Wan, who nicknamed herself “The Frogologist”. Recognizing that education of this farming industry to the public was imperative as young Singaporeans need to be brought back in touch with the land and that everyone ought to know of the existence and importance of farms, Ms Wan has strived to change the stereotype of farms being old school and backward, revamping the farm to what we know of today.
