Kranji War Memorial

Step though a large arch and you will find yourself in one of the most historical places of Singapore, a site which serves as a sign of dedication to the many men and women who lost their lives to protect the British's Crown Colony in World War 2. Here, you will not only find the final resting place of 4458 Allied servicemen, 64 soldiers who fought in World War 1 and even Commonwealth soldiers who have died during the Konfrantasi period have also been buried in countless rows of marked graves.  The grounds of the memorial is set on a hilly terrain with views around the largely undeveloped landscape, although signs of urbanity are clearly visible further afield towards Johor.

Although just a solemn and imposing structure from afar, the Kranji War Memorial has a far greater meaning within its grandeur. The design of the Kranji Memorial has been crafted such that it represents each aspect of the military. While the 12 vertical walls represent the Army, the roof, resembling wings, represents the Air Force, and the central tower, which looks like the periscope of a submarine, represents the Navy. Furthermore, if you take an even closer look at the walls, you would actually find the names of all 24 000 soldiers who died in the Second World War inscribed on it, symbolising our remembrance of their sacrifice
